What is PEG care?

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is a procedure involving the placement of a soft plastic feeding tube into the stomach. Someone may need a PEG tube if they cannot get enough nutrition eating food by mouth. Without sufficient nutrition they may lose too much weight and become dehydrated, so liquid food (formula) is delivered through the tube to give the body the nutrition it needs. The tube is also used for water intake and for administering medications. 

Your Elite PEG carer will be fully trained to ensure they can support you with the following: 

• Flushing the PEG feed regularly to ensure it does not become blocked. 
• Keeping the skin around the stoma site clean and healthy.
• Rotating and advancing the PEG tube to ensure the plastic disc inside the stomach is rotated frequently and does not become embedded.
